i don't know very much about cameras so i need a bit of help. i'm looking for something with minimum 3mp resolution, optical zoom, movie mode with sound. i don't need anything as impressive as tranquil's latest toy, just something that takes good quality photos. also, are there any brands i should steer clear of?

thanks

I can certainly recommend the DSC-T1 which has everything you ask for in a package that easily slips into the shrt pocket. it weighs 180g I think and has a massive viewing screen compared with most other cameras. It takes duo and duo pro and these are getting pretty cheap these days too. you can get this is silver or black

thanks masseur. it sounds like a good unit but it's a little higher up the food chain than i was looking (retails around AU$1000 which is a weeny bit expensive).

@gforce: tranquil got a Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-F828 (an 8MP beheamoth)

@gforce, a Sony DSC-F828, take a look at topic 59484

@gelfen, nah. I got mine from an ebay hong kong for £280 which is a tad over $700 but they are 20-30 cheaper now

here www.dpreview.com

i would recommend a canon over sony on Digital cams. Sony maybe #1 in digital/electronics...but were talking about cams here.

Plus you can get the same functions of a sony on a canon at a lower price

I've had various canons, both digital and non digital, but keep coming back to Sony for quality of camera build and picture quality. The only thing canons have going for them is that they use the cheaper compact flash

dpreview is definitly a great site for comparing the various cameras though

I'm still gonna recommend the casio exilim range for a nice cheap point and click digi cam. They small, have plenty of features and have the big 2" screen masseur seems to enjoy

EX-Z4 is what i have and you can pick em up for about £200 now

the sony has a 2.5" screen but the casio is a nice camera and while I wanted to get another T1 for my wifes handbag (since I keep the T1 with me) she doesn't want to spend that much so I'm taking your advice MixiN and looking closely at that EX-Z4

edit: btw, the kids already have the 2MP version of the casio and are happy, though that has quite a tony screen, but good enough for their excursions. no sound on video though for that one
