i dunno it in technical terms but my understanding of the matter is this.
(The t630 is the most popular example at the mo)
The T-mobile T630 has the t-zones sign as one of the icons in the menu. It replaced a "wap icon" (not sure though) or something.
flashing the phone is basically the restoration of the original "firmware" (i.e. u get the factory settings that by SE set back.)

correct me if i'm wrong guys

welcome to esato by the way

so it just allows you to bring back the original stuff the manufacturer gave you? hmm... meaning to say it's not the term used for upgrading the firmware of a mobile unit to another unit? (like the t610 being "FLASHED" to t630)

Eh, actually, what you described was unbranding a phone. Flashing a phone involves installing a higher version of FirmWare onto your phone, similar to upgrading a PC running Windows 2000 to Windows XP. You can learn about it here.

thanks to both of you guys for clarifying things for me. a newbie like me never gets a warm welcome like this one (in other sites i got banned for asking this similar question. )
so:
flashing a phone: resetting the firmware to the default one that the manufacturer gave
unbranding a phone: upgrading the firmware of your phone to another handset model.

tnx to both of you!

You got it backwards.

Flashing: Upgrading your FirmWare to a higher version or upgrading to a next higher model.
Unbranding: Resetting your phone to the factory default settings and icons (if applicable).

And yes, you need to watch out for some people. They'll bite your head off for not using the search, so, to be a little mean,

Sort of. You do the same process, but if you want to get technical, you don't flash the phone when you unbrand it. When you flash the phone, you are actually loading the new FirmWare. When you are unbranding your phone, you are actually loading the uncustomized GDFS onto the phone. So in essence, yes, you do the same process for both, but it's not the same thing.

@agent47, you're not stupid, don't sweat it, just learn from your mistakes.
