Symbian Signed provides single, low-cost and unified certification program
Symbian Signed has been publicly launched. This industry-endorsed certification program delivers developer authentication and anti-tamper security for Symbian OS applications. More than 300 Symbian native C++ and Visual Basic applications and their associated content have already achieved Symbian Signed status through the extensive beta testing phase performed over the past year. This has significantly improved the general quality of Symbian OS applications coming to market. In order to install an application that is "Symbian Signed", consumers must have a Symbian root certificate in their phone. You need to download this to your P800 smartphone.

Symbian Signed
Cheaper and easier application signing process - Increased developer opportunities through wider market exposure
Symbian Signed, the industry-endorsed application signing program that promotes best practice in Symbian OS content and application development, was publicly launched on May 18, 2004. The program tests applications against industry-agreed criteria in support of requirements from network operators and mobile manufacturers.
The program also delivers developer authentication and anti-tamper security for Symbian OS applications. The signing means that the application has passed the test criteria and is digitally signed ("sealed") to guarantee the source and integrity of the application. The aim is to increase the maturity among developers, the general quality of applications coming to market and the trust among consumers for Symbian OS applications.
Symbian Signed is designed to satisfy mobile developers' needs and to ensure a thriving, open market for trusted mobile applications by providing a single, low-cost and unified certification program. Benefits for developers include consistent testing criteria and a common process that will greatly simplify certification of your applications across all Symbian OS phones. Developers who have achieved Symbian Signed have the right to use the "For Symbian OS" logo.
Consumers will be able to find, download and install Symbian Signed applications to Sony Ericsson smartphones. Sony Ericsson encourages all smartphone users to download and install signed applications only, and from July 1, 2004, all new Symbian applications submitted for commercial distribution to the Sony Ericsson Application Shop will be required to have passed the Symbian Signed certification. In support of Symbian Signed, Sony Ericsson will from that date offer preferential positioning to Symbian Signed applications on its download portals. As of January 1, 2005, all Symbian applications distributed through Sony Ericsson consumer channels must be Symbian Signed. Developers are required to make sure their applications have been properly tested and provided with digital signing prior to distribution.
Symbian Signed offers flexible signing options to support the different needs of the Symbian OS ecosystem. These options are:
Test House Certification: Suitable for ISVs with a small number of applications. Applications are submitted to the Symbian Signed portal and tested by an independent third party test house.
Self Certification: Suitable for ISVs with more than 15 of their own applications that require Symbian Signed status. ISVs or network operators certify their own applications through the re-use of internal, recognized Quality Assurance processes.
Publisher Certification: Suitable for application publishers, Symbian OS licensees and network operators or any public software distribution portal owner. The publisher tests and certifies the application using its own quality assurance processes on behalf of the originating ISV.

Instructions on how to prepare for "Symbian Signed" applications on Sony Ericsson phones
In order to install an application that is "Symbian Signed", consumers must have a Symbian root certificate in their phone. Sony Ericsson P800 smartphones, launched already in December 2002 - long before the Symbian Signed program was being set up, do not have this root certificate preinstalled, but it is pretty straight-forward to install it on the phone.
Instructions are provided in a zip file, along with the Certification_installation.sis file:
Download Symbian Signed root certificate for the P800>>
All Sony Ericsson P900 phones should have a Symbian root certificate preinstalled. All future Symbian OS based phones will also have it from factory. If you have accidentally erased it from your phone it is possible to use the same procedures as if you had a P800.
