Bought a r520m off eBay. Data functions are great, but the earpiece (ear speaker) seems to be blown. With volume at 8/8 you can just *barely* hear something. at 8/6 and below it is dead silent.

Firmware r4a008, if I'm reading that correctly. I assume this is a hardware problem. I did some searches here and elsewhere and haven't seen a germane discussion about it. The "earpiece" test in the service menu has the same results. You can just barely hear a rising tone in the earpiece. I don't have a headset to test with.

If you play back a voice memo you can barely hear it and then it POPs loudly at the end, so there must be some amplification left somewhere.

I *really* don't want to have to buy another phone, but I will if needed. I have heard that you can open the phone with a set of Torx drivers but I doin't see how.

Any thoughts before I start trolling eBay for another one?

U might think that im telling a lie, but im not. this trick fixed the same problem on my z200

Heh.

You will be amused to know that I tried it. I could hear the speaker flexing from the pressure, but no joy.

Thanks for the tip, though.

frater,
whose wife is looking funny at him now.

Well you should try to disassemble it. Maybe you will find something. Maybe some water in it.

well, as i see it, some aparts must be replaced in your fone, but it wont be easy, cos aparts for r520 are real rarity. but i do think the the earfone can be replaced by an r320 as well, if it is. i would suggest to bring it a service and let it check by an expert. after a check come back and report us what happened. good luck

I'll dig into it as soon as I can figure out how to do it w/out damaging the innards.

In the meantime, I bought another r520m off eBay for $27 (!) and am using that one.

Thanks for the input, everyone.

It's the plain silver/gray color.

Everything works perfectly. Some small scratches on the case, but that's the only problem.

Both batts were fine; li-po 600mAh BUS-11. Goes for days before I think to recharge.
