I'll be traveling to the US for about 4 months soon and so as soon as i get there i'm going to be looking to a decent PAYG network, does anyone have any recommendations?

Really coverage is more important than price of calls and txts etc, also would like gprs access on it as well.

If anyone has any experience with this I'd greatly appreciate it if you could pass on any perls of wisdom,

Thanks guys

firstly i'll be in and around wisconsin then i'll be traveling over to the east coast and spending some time in new york.

By your question i assume there arnt national providers because of the size of the country and it's done regionally? if there was one that could do in whilst i was in wisconsin and then when i travel over to NY that would be great

There are national providers, it's more am issue of coverage. If you are in larger cities you have more options than if you'll be in smaller ones or traveling rurally a lot. As far as gsm prepaid, t-mobile is your best bet, but i'm not sure how their wisconsin coverage is. Also one thing to note is that the phone number you get will be for the region you buy it in. The us doesn't have national mobile numbers like a lot of other countries do. Check t-mobile's prepaid coverage map for wisconsin. This message was posted from a Z600

go to an ATT corporate store and ask for a go phone SIM card, no need for verified address, no credit check, and no contract, it's the best bang for the buck and it gives u GPRS as well and they shouldn't charge you for the SIM. at least they didn't to me, if they do tell them last time u came u didn't get charged. Nationwide coverage although as you know networks in AMerica do not have the same coverage as networks in EUrope or rest of the world because of the land area. Anyways, some cities use 850 over 1900 on ATT so that is one thing to consider if you are worried about coverage. T-mobile is only on 1900 but that could limit the coverage it has in some markets.

In the end i still think Go phone is the best alternative because of all it offers for the price.

The advantage to T-Mobile's plan is that right now they have a special that if you recharge with $25 or more before the end of June you will have airtime for a year without having to recharge. Plus you get WAP GPRS free right now as well. If you already have an unlocked GSM phone then you can just get the SIM and add at least $25 and your good to go.

AT&T has their prepaid setup basically like postpaid where you pay a certain amount per month for a certain amount of minutes whether you use them or not. If you are not many calls then it's not as cost effective. Not sure if you can buy just the SIM card with AT&T or if you have to buy the whole package.

If you're not set on having GSM, then you can go with either Virgin Mobile or Verizon Prepay as well. Verizon is supposed to have the best coverage in the US, but you'd have to compare the pricing to see if it works for you or not. Virgin Mobile uses Sprint PCS's network in the US.

I have an unlocked tri-band. I called t-mobile to try to find out what the prepaid setup is. Word is - all you need is a sim, unlocked phone and go.

But they say you have to bring the phone in. Doesn't make sense with prepay. This was designed to switch phones easily and go.

Now they are going back to the routine of "let's tie it up with red tape".
I think it's "smoke and mirrors".

thanks for any info
