Hello.
I'm in Romania but I bought my T610 from USA (T-mobile branded).
A few days ago, i tried to upgrade my firmware, at the local
service provider (Orange, actually, i gave it to a friend of mine that works there). Now.. to my surprise, the next day, the guy told me that the people from the local SE service centre could not "upload a different fw version to the phone", becouse "it rejected it" with an unknown error. Later, my friend spoke to someone from SE, who said that phones bought from USA can be upgraded only in USA). I think this is bs.
Did anyone have this problem before ?

servicepoints use prevents branded phones from beeing upgraded with original firmware... but it can still be upgraded with the branded firmware (which in your case is T-Mobile), and this can be done in other servicepoints as well, not only in US.
