News about cellphones with WiFi, or chips for them, is coming thick and fast at the moment. Mixed in among the rumours and announcements i came across one that d slipped past us—a prototype 3G/WiFi phone from NEC that was announced last December. around the Japanese web is that this one is going to finally surface in July/August as the N900iL—presumably in somewhat more fully-featured form than the rather ordinary-looking December design. NEC s prototype may answer one question about how WiFi in cellphones will work though—you apparently will get two phone numbers and be able to use the phone in either WiFi cellphone or dual modes with the latter unsurprisingly meaning that if you’re in both WiFi and cellphone range calls to either number will get through.

WHEN DOCOMO ANNOUNCED its dual mode, Wi-Fi and 3G handset, the N900iL (from NEC) back in July, it kept pretty quiet about the fact that it actually uses Linux instead of Symbian. The INQ only discovered this when searching for a picture of the handset now it's shipping. Linux is not mentioned in the tech specs.

Japan's NTT DoCoMo is, of course, a major supporter of Symbian with Fujitsu supplying DoCoMo with multiple Symbian based models, for example. The natural conclusion, however, was that integrating Wi-Fi and 3G was easier using Linux.

While telecoms operators like BT talk about offering combined wireless and cellular handsets, DoCoMo has just gone ahead and done it. Except at $363 - $455, this product is aimed at business users not the home.

Using its Passage Duple system N900iL users will be able to make VoIP calls over the corporate wireless network or switch over to 3G when they have left their offices. Since the N900iL's browser can be used both inside and outside the office, users always have access to Interent mail and documents saved on intranet servers. Instant messaging between N900iL handsets on a wireless LAN is also possible.

Thanks to the use of SIP, when calling internally across the wireless LAN, a caller can see status information (ie confirm if the called party is available, off-line, in a meeting, on a business trip, etc). The handset's battery last longer for VoIP calls – 160 minutes versus 140 minutes on 3G.

Like the Sharp 902 announced by Vodafone last week, this handset also has a 2 megapixel camera. But this one's shipping.
