Scaled Composites' SpaceShipOne reached the height of 211,440 feet in a May 13 test flight that many believed was the last test before staking a claim to the Ansari X Prize. The venture, backed by Paul Allen and Burt Rutan has decided one more launch is needed before trying to cash in on the US$10 million cash prize. They have announced a June 21 sub orbital space flight in an attempt to reach the 100 kilometer mark, but the flight will not qualify for the X Prize since it will not carry ballast equivalent to two other occupants nor will they attempt a second flight within two weeks time.

For those who are interested in seeing the historic attempt up close, the June flight at the Mojave Civilian Aerospace Test Center will be open to the public. Further information for those who would like to attend will be available at the Scaled Composites website. If this test is successful, SpaceShipOne will then compete for the Ansari X Prize after the group gives representatives 30 days notice. Some may question why they will not shoot for the X Prize with this flight, but Scaled Composites seems to have taken a careful incremental approach to reaching their goals. Making sure they can reach the X Prize height without a rush to do a second flight would fit their pattern. Making this flight would also earn them the honor of having the first commercial sub orbital space flight that could have been taken away if another competitor decided to launch for the X Prize before they were ready. If everything goes off without a hitch, SpaceShipOne should reach the 100 kilometer mark sometime around 10:30 ET on June 21

Private craft soars into space history

Pilot Mike Melvill celebrates after landing SpaceShipOne after a trip to suborbital space.

MOJAVE, California (CNN) -- SpaceShipOne left the Earth behind on Monday morning and made its indelible entry in the history books as the first private spacecraft to carry humans into space. It touched down safely at Mojave Airport at 11:15 ET.

SpaceShipOne landed safely in the Mojave Desert Monday after flying into space, reaching an altitude of 62.5 miles.

I saw this on the news yesterday that they were attempting it. If/when they start tourism in space

I reckon its going to cost someone's life savings to go on one

Yes but this is major step for commercial space flight and in the coming years as more private companies will come into this arena..then hopefully so we will all see the day when when we can travel into space..

affordable means a flight around few thousand dollars....
