i really want a laptop and i am willing to spend up to £1000 anything less than this would be great. i really like the look of sony vaio and apple. here is what i need:
i will be using it from home and college for work and would like to use it for surfing the net, email, essays etc, burning cd and dvd so it needs a dvd and cd rw
what do you think is the best one, could i afford apple or sony for what i want or would it be better to buy a dvd rw separtely as the dvd rw doesnt need to travel with me.
im totally stuck on what to get
looks is a must, it cant be ugly lol
thanks in advance

i would have thought £1000 would be ok
i dont need a huge amount of memory, i jus want it for around the house and college with a cd rw, basically.
i want a dvd rw too but i can buy that separate at a later date if need be.
what would you recommend?

@copperfield - I am not quite sure here if your budget can buy you a decent branded laptop with P4 processor - unless, if you'll choose @masseur's suggestion. A second-hand one probably will buy you one. Happy hunting. My choice is a Compaq Presario brand!

You can't get anything easier to use or better looking than an Apple Mac. Mac OS X is just great, (voted best OS of 2004 by
PCWorld Magazine!) and comes with the best bluetooth support for SE phones anywhere.
AppleWorks will help you with your essays or you can get
Microsoft Office 2004 (apparently the best version of Office for any platform.)
You'll also get the great iApps such as
iPhoto,
iTunes,
iCal,
iChat,
iSync,
iMovie and
iDVD built-in.
You won't find anything better than these applications without spending loads of money - you can make very professional videos and DVDs with iMovie and iDVD. You also get
Garageband, which is Apple's new music making program.
Also, because they're all made by Apple, you won't spend more time sorting out incompatibilities than you will using them... everything works straight out of the box.
You can get an
Apple iBook for between £799 and £1049. Unfortunately the cheapest PowerBook is £1,149.00.
With a SuperDrive (for burning DVDs) you're looking at £1,019.00 for the 14-inch iBook.
I'd definately recommend a Mac - I've had my iBook for 3 years and its still going strong. And I've just bought an
eMac because they're such good value for money.
Here's a few other reasons to buy a Mac:
Safari

i do like apple and have been thinking of an ibook for a while now, it just i am used to windows and changing to another system will take a while to get used too.
i only want a 12inch ibook if i get one, which one would you recommend as i know there are loads of variations on size, memory etc
theres g3 and g4 which are the best
also i did want to burn dvds but i know it would be very expensive to get a built in dvd rw
i did here that you can get software so you can use a cd rw drive to make dvds - is this true and what software is available
cheers
