Japanese manufacturer Panasonic is finally offering a phone model with exchangeable covers - actually, they're actually called "X-Changeable Cover".

The new A500 was announced at the CommunicAsia 2004 exhibition in Singapore, along with four other models. This dual-band GSM handset is possibly one of their first lower-end clamshells, which include features that have progressively become a norm over time. A 65,536-colour TFT LCD, 16-chord polyphonics, infrared (IR) data support, Java application capability, SMS/MMS messaging, and a WAP 2.0 browser are all available to its user.

A "one push auto open" button, located on the left side of the clamshell, lets a user open the clamshell without having to manually flip it out. But closing it will always be a manual process on the A500.

And those "X-Changeable Cover" covers are attached to the phone via little screws that go into the four corners of the front and back of the A500. A tool is provided to loosen and fix the screws back in place - no more fumbling around with "clicking" plastic covers in place or trying forcefully to get them off!

Panasonic expects to have the A500 out into markets by the fourth quarter of this year (October-December).
