Just when I was really looking forward to see Samsung launch their SGH-i500 Palm OS based smartphone, the Koreans have done the unthinkable and have superseded it with this more-recent upgrade - the SGH-i530.
Having an almost-similar size and weight, the i530 has had several upgrades applied to it since its supposedly-released i500 predecessor. These included a 1.0-megapixel camera (one of the first few to become available), an 65,536-colour UFS (ultra fine & high speed) LCD that provides major improvements to current TFT display technology as well as having its resolution doubled (162x176 versus 324x352 pixels on the i530), external 65,536-colour OLED display, and 64-chord polyphonic tones for call and message alerts.
But there's always two sides of a coin - and in the case of the i530, Samsung has done away with some of the features originally planned for the i500. Things like the rotatable display and tri-band support are no longer features its user can appreciate.
Which kind of leaves the i530 MITs terminal in a position where it now has a somewhat different product proposition.
So what does the i530 have now? In addition to the already-mentioned facts, it comes with all the same features supposedly offered on the i500 - including a Palm OS 5.2 user interface (UI) with touchscreen and Graffiti Anywhere support, high-speed GPRS data support accessible by its internal WAP or HTML browser, photo-taking and video-capturing, and support for SD memory and SDIO accessory cards.
And just when I want to let everyone know when the i530 will be available, I realised that they've once again not included such information. So we just all have to be patient and pray that they ARE going to release this phone - and not have me do all this in vain.
