Yes it is possible but u have to wait for the Orange branded version of the new f/w.
That is the legal way at least. There is a way to unbrand it but I don't know how plus your not, er, supposed to

what happens if you use an orange p900 with an unbranded CDA and update that way - will it work?

My CDA is 162003/5 - do we know if that is the generic CDA?

I had real problems when I used the SE online update service to update my Orange P900 as it retrograded the firmware from R4B03 (which the phone shipped with) down to R3A06 (the latest f/w revision officially recognised by both Orange and SE - they don't update the website very often obviously ).

Probably easiest to take it to an official SE service centre as they not only unbranded it but restored it back to the latest f/w (R5B02)

AFAIK... CDA:162003/5 is the generic English/French model number i.e. unbranded (its the number my phone was unbranded to...) the Orange CDA is 162004/3 if I recall...

As far as upgrading the firmware after the phone has been unbranded, I've been lead to believe that the SE update service now checks IMEI numbers so if the phones IMEI is logged to Orange it will still only flash to the last version approved by Orange (which sucks!) and means getting the latest official SE f/w update done by an SE service center in perpetuity

If anyone knows different please let us know...

I can only confirm that the SE online update now DOES check the IMEI to resolve the firmware.

162003/5 is the english (UK) version, while 162004/3 is the CDA for the Orange network. However, messing with the CDA 4/3 while locked to the Orange network might be problematic. First unlocking seems to me the first step to go if you want to upgrade to an unbranded version other than CDA162004/3.
