What exactly is this gold connecter in the rear of the P900?

Is it just to plug in to a car kit or does it have anything to do with the signal strength? The reason I'm asking is because I just took apart my P900 to replace the jog dial assembly and the keypad because they stopped working and I accidentaly broke off this part (it's still in there but not attached to the circuit board). The jog dial and keypad are working fine now but my phone has very little to no reception most of the time. How can I get this fixed? I'm in the US currently so going to a service center isn't an option.

Thanks

That is for connecting an external antennae. It should have nothing to do with how your phone gets reception now, though.

That's strange, I have my P900 next to a T630 and the P900 has no signal while the T630 has 3-4 bars. I guess I'll have to wait untill I can take it to a service center.

If the connector has shorted out then you will lose/have poor signal. It is the same if you plug the aerial lead from a car kit in with no aerial attached it will loose signal.
You best best it to open your phone again and check that there is no shorts on the connector.

has anyone ever connected their Px00 to an external aerial in a weak signal area to see how much better the coverage becomes?

So should I just remove that gold piece since it isn't connected anymore? I just left it in there because there is no place for it to move so I thought it might still work

might be best leaving it there unless you can see an improvment in reception by taking it out. i assume you are talking about some sort of plastic sort of dust type cover?

As far as I know, teh gold piece is in fact the antenna for your phone. All phones with an inbuilt antenna have this concealed in the body but yet visible in some form (my old siemens had it too). When someone adds an external antenna, they typically increase the range by making the internal antenna more powerful (you might have seen those tv antennas of old times... they are nothing but pieces of metal... and in remote areas you need bigger ones)

In your case, you have pulled apart the internal antenna and hence weak signal. If you can get that assembled properly, you should be fine

That makes sense now! I guess since I don't have the knowledge or the tools to reattatch that part to the circuit board I will have to wait a month before I can get it fixed. I guess that's what you get from trying to fix it yourself. Thanks for the info guys!
