Using the Sony Ericsson K700 with an Apple Mac
This information is now out-of-date since Apple released iSync v1.5 and Mac OS X 10.3.5, but is here for users of earlier OS's
After getting my K700 today and only reading a few comments from Mac users I thought I’d provide my findings on using the K700 with a Mac.
I’ve read of a few problems getting the K700 to sync so until Apple releases an update to
iSync here’s how I paired and synced my K700i.
I'm using Mac OS X 10.3.4 and the latest Bluetooth and iSync updates.
1. Delete any pairings from the phone and the Mac (Bluetooth Preference Pane)
2. On the phone, go to
Connectivity > Bluetooth > My devices > New device
3. It will search for the Mac. Select it when found and enter any passcode.
4. The Pairing request screen will appear on the Mac so enter the passcode:
5. Then you will be asked which services you want to use. Check all.
6. Open “Bluetooth Setup Assistant” on the Mac. Click ‘Continue’ then choose ‘Mobile Phone’ from the list.
7. It will search for your phone, select it and click ‘Continue’
8. It will attempt to pair with the phone.
9. On the phone choose
Yes to
Add it to My Devices and enter the passcode suggested by the Mac
10. Select “Use with Address Book.”
The top one (Setup iSync) will probably be greyed out. Don’t worry!
Click ‘Continue’ and ‘Quit”
11. Open ‘iSync’ and your K700 should be added to the list of items to sync.
12. Click on the K700 icon, choose your options then click “Sync Now”
That’s it!
Notes
- iCal seems to sync perfectly
- Address Book syncs names, phone numbers and email addresses but not postal addresses etc. I guess this will require an update to iSync.
Further findings
Salling Clicker isn’t fully compatible yet. Some functions work, some don’t.
BluePhoneMenu seems to work fully, although it hasn’t yet been certified by the developer.
Bluetooth File Transfer works fine and is over 4 times faster than the T610. ~5k/sec on the T610 compared to 22k/sec on the K700!
AAC audio files as encoded by iTunes playback in the phone perfectly as long as you change the file extension to .mp4
Update 25.06.04 07:05 Protected music purchased from the iTunes Music Store cannot be played. It transfers to the phone only to be followed by a "Cannot play this video" message. The file then seems to be 'lost' in the phone. It takes up memory but doesn't appear in the File Manager and seems it can't be deleted without a master reset.
Update 25.06.04 07:05 Mac OS X's Address Book works perfectly for making and recieving calls, Caller ID, sending and receiving SMSs.

BluePhoneMenu 1.2.11 is now certified fully compatible by the developer.
GSM Remote can be used with a standard serial (not USB) Sony Ericsson data cable to send files and read the phonebooks of the K700. This should also work using Mac OS 9, but I have yet to test this.
I used a standard PC RS-232 data cable (from eBay) with a
Keyspan serial port adapter.

Which version of OS and iSync are you using? I can't seem to get the phone to appear on iSync 1.4 under 10.3.3. It's paired successfully and can send/receive files, including all contacts in Address Book. The phone just cannot be added to iSync. Any tips? Thanks.

The important thing is to do the pairing twice. Once from the Mac and then again from the phone.
Try completely deleting the pairing information from the Mac and phone and start again.
The phone has automatically appeared in iSync for me on most occasions, but I did have to go to Devices > Add Device... once.
Hopefully Apple will officially support the K700 soon.

Thanks Jools -- been looking for this kind of info for a while! So Apple still doesn't completely support the K700i even though SE say it does support Apple Synchronization!?
Do you think/know if Apple will fully support the phone? Does the fact that a K700 icon pops up on iSync prove that an update is coming? I'm quite annoyed that my Addresses won't be synched when I get my K700i in a few days...
Is there a manual Vcard way to sort this out temporarily that has worked for you? Using BluePhoneMenu or something? (I'm unfamiliar with this software)

Yeah, an update to iSync is definately required, although I have no information as to when that may be. Hopefully soon.
I'm not sure that the icon that iSync uses for the K700 actually is a K700. I think its just a generic phone icon that coincidentally resembles the K700!
I haven't tried manually transferring vCards to the phone so I don't know if that will send the address info. I'll give it a go and post my findings.

has anyone got the bluetooth computer remote control thing to work. Im using 10.3.4 on a powerbook with bluetootle built in and when i try to use this feature it says it cannot connect and doesn't work. Anyone else been able to get this feature to work?
And just to add, isync for me work first try without any problems

The bluetooth remote control feature built-in to the K700 doesn't work with Apple Mac's, its a PC only feature. However, it's a one-way only feature so it can't send info back to the phone to be displayed on the screen.
Salling Clicker is currently not fully compatible due to bugs in the current K700 firmware. Hopefully these will be ironed out in a future firmware upgrade.
