Here is a list of the total costs of currently available online tariffs. If anything here is wrong, let me know! The Orange tariffs are based on information on a different thread.

O2
50mins, 500 texts. £29.99+12x£22.50 = £299.99
100mins, 500 texts. £29.99+12x£25.00 = £329.99
200mins, 500 texts. 12x£30.00 = £360.00

Vodaphone
100mins, 50 texts. £100+12x£15 = £280
100mins, 250 texts. £50+12x£22 = £314

Orange
120mins, 30 texts. £129.99+12x15=£309.99
120mins, 250 texts. £49.99+12x25=£349.99

For my usage the O2 100/500 and Vodaphone 100/250 plans are the best. I'd probably be ok with the Vodaphone tariff, but as i'm already with O2, and Voda coverage is poor in my home town, I think i'll stick with O2.

Also consider that you can go on a higher tariff and then move after 4 months, sometimes works out even cheaper (plus you get more for the first 4 months. For example:

O2
200mins, 500 texts. 4x£30.00 = £120.00
50mins, 500 texts. £29.99+8x£22.50 = £180
Total = £300.00

You can't move to a lower value tariff on O2 until 6 months has passed (according to the new contract I signed yesterday). It may be the same for other networks.

I was under the impression that if you changed tariff in the middle of your contract period, your contract your contract was effectively restarted. Using your example, if you changed to a cheaper contract after 4 months you would effectively have tied yourself in to the same phone and supplier for 16 months.
I would personally prefer to pay a little bit more and have the opportunity to upgrade my phone / change my network every 12 months. I would be gutted if I had tied myself into having my T610 for 16 months and had to wait another 4 months until I could get a K700!

On my last O2 contract I switched to a lower tariff after 6 months but I wasn't tied to another 12 months, only the 6 months remaining.

My local O2 Retail Store (Cheltenham) are doing the K700 free on any tariff plus a free O2 Digital Music Player (if you ask).

In Orange you can switch to a cheaper tariff after 4 months (that's the way I got my p800 last year) , in Vodafone used to be 3 months (not sure now), in both cases the contract isn't renewed, you just need to be with them for the months left to 12.
