We recently posted OrangeScribble 2.6, a graphical IM application for P800 and P900 handsets, onto http://proto.orange.net/scribble . This release supports color ink.

General info: The app client is free. There's no cost to use the service beyond your usual GPRS cost with whatever network you're on. It uses Jabber to send compressed ink from client to server to client.

Users with existing accounts must upgrade to reconnect. This was necessary because we have changed the underlying transport protocol to support better scalability.

More info and a screenshot are at http://scribble.orange.us/blog

Ok, I've just never heard about this software before...what IM clients is it compatible with? Or is it just for Orange Messenger (if that app even exists anymore...) how does it work? Thanks for the input...

thanks blount, I'll give it a work out as soon as I get home as I've been waiting for this

@bacanito, I'm connected via phone at the mo so can't give links but a quick search for scribble should give you the previous threads about this including a list of members who are signed up and what their scribble username is

@bacanito: Unlike in normal IM, with this application the users see each other's actual handwriting. It provides a shared sheet of virtual paper that both parties write on. The screenshot at http://scribble.orange.us/blog will give you an idea what it looks like in use.

We shipped the first version a few months ago. Unfortunately it is not compatible with other IM systems, as they do not have the capability to display or capture handwriting. You either have to know someone who has a supported handset, or find people to chat with on forums like this.

We are working on some new clients for it, but for now only the SonyEricsson P800 and P900 are supported.

Good to see you guys released an update.. I tried it out when you first posted the link, but I think a lot of members lost interest. The potential is definately there. What I was wondering was whether this software could somehow interface with a pc? I think communication with other mobile users through a graphical interface is a stretch being that there are incompatibilities between networks and phones. However, pc are almost all alike. The variation is not as broad. So if this software could in anyway allow one to install it on a pc and communicate with a mobile user I think it would be awesome. I have a gps software that allows remote users to track my position through their home pc. In addition to IM messengers that can communicate to pc users. I think that type of interaction is more prevalent at this period. A thought.. Would like to know your feedback on that..

That sounds like it would need a dedicated server, just like a messenger program would?

@BigFeat: Yes, there is a lot of potential in connecting OrangeScribble to the desktop. We see it as a way around the "network effect" problem: few people have a pen handset, and even fewer have a pen handset and have friends with pen handsets.

The big question is this: would any of your deskbound friends run a desktop OrangeScribble application so that you could contact them, or launch one in response to a "I want to scribble with you" text?

For the desk version you could just type or even use the mouse pointer to get creative
