Can anyone tell me somewhere I can ipgrade the firmware on my P800 without having to go into a Sony Ericsson shop as advised in the Frequently asked questions area? I've never even SEEN a Sony Ericsson shop!

No, he can't. Only owners of p900 can upgrade their phone by themselfs. SE service point is the only option I know of.
