Ok, this one has had me stumped for a while...
I am currently an Orange UK contract customer, and my 1 year contract expired probably 2 years ago. I want to upgrade to the K700 but they are unwilling to upgrade me for free and offer me double mins for 6 months as they do for new customers (and I dont want the customised software).
One option is to change to O2, get a little-customised phone and take advantage of new customers discounts.
However I wish to stick with Orange. I believe they offer the best package for me (low GPRS usage, tariff options etc.) and there overall performance seems to rate better than other networks.
I would therefore like to know if the following is possible:
1. get my PAC code and cancel the contract;
2. sign up to a new contract with them through Carphone Warehouse or similar;
3. use my PAC number when asked if I want to transfer a number.
Sounds straight forward to me. Orange, Time2Talk and OrangeDealer have all said this is not possible. I am however not convinced. The only problem would be if the PAC authority (anyone have an email address?) prevented this from happening. Has anyone done this? Comments?
I am tempted to try this as I should be told whether it is possible or not within my 14 day cooling-off period.
(Time2Talk informed me I could go PAYG for 3 months and then become a new contract customer, therefore enabling me to do this. Why 3 months?)

Its possible that somewhere in the contracts there is a clause stating you must not have been an orange customer in the last x months (possibly 3?). This may be to stop people from taking advantage of the 'new customer' deals everytime a new deal comes out.
Just a thought!

Nope - can't be done. A PAC is to port to ANOTHER network. If you stay on your own network you must upgrade. You could port to a payg service on another net then port back as a new customer. SOme nets though won't let you port staright back

Simple question: why not?
Is it a terms and conditions issue? I don't think so, I've read the Orange terms and conditions many times and not seen anything relevant?
Is it a technical issue? If so give me the details.
Something else?

A pac code is to transfer your number to another network.
You cannot port from Orange to Orange (but you can trnafer from payg to contract and visa versa - nop pac is needed for this).
I don't understand why you find it so hard to believe when you have already been told umpteen times.

Is it vital that you have the double minutes/texts? I'm also wanting to upgrade to a K700i on Orange but didn't want to pay the £129.99 it would've been on my current contract.
Went to an o2 shop and they said they could give me the phone for free and for £25.00 a month I'd get 100 cross-network minutes and 100 texts (doubled in the first 6 months).
Phoned Orange and asked for my PAC code. They asked why and I told them about the offer I'd had from o2. They matched it apart from the double for the first 6 months and everyone's happy. They keep a good customer who pays on time and upgrades every year, I get the phone I want for free and a better contract

orange pac codes start with ORG so they'll know straight away wat your doing. and it is possible to do same network tranfers but only if you change your billing agent. ie o2 singlepoint to o2 direct. or voda singlepoint to voda direct. altho vodafone bought singlepoint now so everyone is technically vodafone or o2. its not as easy the 6 networks. the life of a mobile phone salesman is a tough one. i got offered a new contract(employment not phone) with phones4u when i done xmas work for them and declined as i was very stressed. i will be posting a thread on why later

One solution is to port to a network like Virgin and then wait 30 days (because Virgin make you wait before they will issue another PAC) and then port back. Bit of a pain in the arse though to do, lot of messing around.
Is your number that important? If you want double minutes and texts for 6 months and the K700i for free then just take out an additional line with orange on a new number and then cancel your old contract. Like Orangeman said above though, dont know why you cant just take everyone's word for it that a same network port isnt possible.... We arent lying you know!

have a look at some of oranges online plans- £25 120mins xnet 250 texts £30 200mins xnet and 500 texts a months and you can still use customer services(UNLIKE O2 ONLINE) from your phone for free
i have just done this told orange i was leaving to goto 3 cos of the free texts they gave me the online plan i wanted got to keep my unlimited wap access and can still add any bundle i want to my account
orange are very flexible esp if you say you are leaving to goto another company just make sure you know what deals the other companies are offering as they do
phone 150 option 6 option 3 and option 3 agian this takes you throught to the disconnection dept (or whatver they are called)

Great advice Slattery - thanks! I've just rung Orange disconnections as you suggested, asked for a PAC, they asked me why I was leaving them, I said one of O2's online plans suited me better - anytime x-network minutes and lots of free texts - and they said they'd match it and throw in another phone - not a K700 - as an upgrade free too. Also got GPRS allowance and allowed to add extra bundle of texts if I want. Talk plan will last for 18 months. I've had to agree to extend my contract for another 12 months, but I don't mind as I didn't want to leave Orange anyway. Boyfriend can have the new Orange phone, I'll keep the sim-free K700! Everyone's happy all round. Yet the Orange shop said I couldn't do this and keep my current phone number - huh. Tell 'em you're leaving and they soon decide otherwise - that's business, don't give away anything unless you have to. Never mind - I'm one happy Orange customer. And unlike O2 it's free to call Orange customer services.
