quick question, is it still possible to walk into a high street shop and get a PAYG sim card without divulging ones entire history, in other words can you still get them anonymously?

Yes, I have bought Virgin SIMs on two seperate occasions recently, paid cash, and was not asked any questions. Never registered them and seem to be having no problems.

I thought none of the operators needed your details for PAYG sims...
I know when ive bought PAYG sims in the past, they only take your details in the shop, they dont actually register your name with the sim. Its like when you buy a PAYG phone, if you register, you get some free credit. If you dont, you get no credit but can use the phone anonymously.
