Just seen this listing on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBay[....]gory=3312&item=6308339448&rd=1

Any ideas on what they are, what they were used for, and who manufactured them?

This could be one for you, @orangeman!!

Orange with microsoft released the first video phone in the UK. They cost over a grand each (you had to buy 2) and use high speed data to work (not very well).

But orange got some good stuff out of it - pataent on revolving camera's, plus microsoft used their mobile windows platform I think.

"The Orange Videophone is a combined PDA and GSM WAP phone with video functionality. It is the most exciting breakthrough in communications for a long time.
The Orange Videophone will be launched in January 2001 and will retail for £1299.00.

Using the most advanced technology, it's the phone that lets our customers see and be seen.
But the Videophone is a lot more than a mobile phone with vision. It's a fully portable, multifaceted handset, whether you think of it as a PDA with a camera, a phone with vision or a video recorder that plays the music you want to hear."

The batteries of the Videophone last for:
- 1 hour video talk time
- 6 hours audio talk time
- 24 hours standby
the Videophone takes approximately 2 hours for a full recharge.

The Videophone has an integrated loudspeaker, and is also sold with a PHF for greater privacy.

The built-in camera can be rotated through 270° to record video clips of up to 45 minutes or take digital stills.
The Videophone camera has 2 focus settings during a video call and 3 when using to record or take still pictures.
There is also a freeze frame facility for optimum picture quality.

These video clips or stills can then be emailed, sent to another Videophone or viewed with the built-in Orange Media Player. The Media Player plays audio files, including MP3. Standard Windows audio files can also be downloaded for ring tones, (the Videophone does not have stereo sound, so it doesn't qualify as a full MP3 player).

Synchronisation:
The Videophone is supplied with a dual-purpose cradle which charges the unit, and synchronises the Videophone applications with those on the PC. So any Word document, Exel document or email can be created on a desktop PC, edited on the Videophone and then synchronised back up to the customers desktop.

The Videophone is dual band, but only for audio calls. Currently video calls can only be made in the UK. All Videophone applications are supported with on-line help.

It was light years ahead of its time
