Welcome to Esato.
If I understand right you can set the alarm whenever you want it to go off e.g an hour before or ten minutes earlier and gives you the description to remind you that you have an appointment etc. And that is the purpose of the alarm.
I know it will be handy to inform you about the time the appointment is set but I guess it is set this way so you can open the flip and take some action for the appointment etc.

thanks for the reply. i've tried this on a friends SE T610, and it works ok on that. my Sl55 manages it ok too. i cant see what the point is of telling me the current date/time for a reminder of an appointment. how am i supposed to find it to amend it etc? i'll have to scroll through all my appts
looks like a bug to me?!

I'm not sure if it is a bug.
Seems to me like the Calendar and the Alarms are two separate functions.
When you add an alarm to a calendar entry it simply sends that info to the alarm function.
I agree it would make sense to include the time of the atual appointment with the alarm message, but just how busy is your schedule if you can't match an alarm with an appointment.
I would prefer it if when the alarm came up, one of the buttons said 'View' which took you straight to the calendar application.
