This may be outright ridiculous. But i was wondering if it is possible to have a smartphone with a HDD drive. Since miniature hard drives are found in many gadgets like the ipod size wont be a problem.and no need to worry about MMC cards and stuff. 20 gb of space in a phone would be more than enough as of now. Is there any such phone? What do you peeps think?

Can you imagine the battery drain a mini HDD would cause when combined with a phone (which already sucks battery as it is)? Thats probably why we havent seen one yet.

Yeah thats true. But is that the only reason why we havent seen the advent of HDD based smartphones?

if a phone used compact flash type 2 memory instead of SD, you could use a 4 GIG microdrive??

But will that solve the battery problem?

Do you guys even consider how HUGE those "Micro" drives are??!?!?! That would give us phones the size of those old 80's clunkers.
The reason why the iPod can house a full 40++GB HDD is because that's all it is! A portable HDD with a DSP chip.
Remember that it's not just the size of the removeable media, you have to consider the size of the slot and all the additional hardware required to read the media.
Another issue is shock... mobile phones are subject to a lot more abuse than iPods, PDAs, or any other electronic device... so moving parts would jsut cause more problems. Solid state memory is the most reliable way to insure shock resistance.
Speed is also another issue. Solid state memory has faster over-all access time (and is more consistent from empty to full) than microdrives which still rely on physical properties to access data.
The last issue is power drain. With everything we have now, hybrids last only 2 days tops with average use. If we add a large, power hungry, and slow, HDD to that setup... we'd be stuck with a P910 that would probably be about 1/2" thicker, 50g heavier, 50% slower, and last only 12 hours. Now, I don't think that's worth the price of larger storage space. If you want more space... buy more sticks... or get an iPod/Archos.

Hi.
I think one more reason is size. Cos the ipod uses something like a laptop hdd. Its pretty large and heavy. Its not a bad idea though,

Today 1 gb may be the norm. But in the future would that be enough? Or then there may come cards with huge storage capacities. Is there a memory limit on MMC cards? And memory sticks?

My question is, what will be the future of storage in smartphones? Will it go in the direction of higher capacity cards or Will HDD based phones be inevitable one day. Considering the rate at which hard drives are getting smaller, i do personally feel that one day HDD may be the norm. I may be wrong.
