How do you check the firmware version on the k700,and what is the best firmware version currently in use?Thanks in advance

the best is most often the latest which cane be R2E if you go to a service centre or R2J if you get it online, although the online update is down at the moment.
There are threads about each of those firmware versions and also a thread about the online update if you want to find out more about any of those
