I haven't had the opertunity to test edge, but I've been using umts quite a bit and my findigs are positive, no problems with stability, around 40kbyte/s download-speed, but only 6kbyte/s upload speed, might be depending on operator and phone(I used an se z1010).
Last month I used up 16GB, but this month I´m going for the record
