With my earlier phone (Siemens S45, does anyone remember this ahead of time phone), I was able to map the number keys on keypad as shortcuts to different functions / applications.
Like pressing and holding 2 for a couple of seconds would start a new SMS message, pressing and holding 5 would toggle IrDA and so on.
The default behaviour on P900 is to bring up the addressbook with the letter being pressed as a start point.
Is there any way (inbuilt or thru application) to get the S45 kind of customization?

when in flip closed mode you can not “map” following keys:
1 to 0,#,*.
But you can have following keys’ shortcuts:
Assign camera button through keymapper
Assign internet button through keymapper
Assign shutdown button as above
Assign press and hold camera button through keymapper
Assign press and hold internet button through keymapper
Press and hold C turn silent mode on/off
Press and hold OK to activate voice dialing
Press and hold "last key up-right (I don’t know the name)" to quickly jump to apps
I some1 knows more shr/cts, welcome

Here are a few more....
Assign pull jog wheel towards you through keymapper
Assign press jog wheel away from you through keymapper
Assign pull and hold jog wheel towards you through keymapper
Assign press and hold jog wheel away from you through keymapper
Plus assign different things for all these buttons with flip onen or flip closed modes.
Oh and holding down the #1 key gives you your voicemail.
Going back to the original topic. There's no need to press the number keys when you can assign your 6 favorite applications to the jog dial in menu closed mode.

I agree with your last
Further the keys 1 to 9 are used for speed-dial, which is very handy, as all of us call some contacts more often
Also note that P900 is limited on fc mode and not all apps operating in fc
following 2 pix are
1st the keys that you can "map" with keymapper in FC
2nd the options/apps that may be assigned to each key press

I agree with a_p_a_n_d_e_y, too. If you're used to how Siemens does it (I owned a ME45 previously), then this feature is really missing from FC mode. All the other suggestions are not that easy and intuitive.

Thanks for all your replies. Seems I'll have to learn new ways and adapt to them.
@Greeny
Here is why
- Touching the screen means first opening the flip
- Even with bluetooth mapped to a key, it is just going to present me with another screen where I have to choose on/off
- When I get to messages app using any of the suggested methods... I get to a summary menu and then choose new SMS to start over
All right, that is all this phone provides probably... but they are still not as short shortcuts as I was used to... and its just not a matter of learning it.. its less flexibility (considering that I quote a 3 year old model).
So, still I guess I will miss pressing 2 for a while and start writing a new SMS
and pressing 5 for a while and put the phone in front of my laptop's IrDA port
I know its not very hard to navigate few menus... but thats just an excuse and it is as simple as we cant get any better than what is provided. It is not much harder if they provided 2 more layers of menu for all what this phone does... but certainly going from here many people will not like that change.
Criticism is welcome

@babis
I have always feared the speed dial since I owned my first phone
Always got to ensure that the keylock is working fine
Leave all spped dial keys unassigned for now
But anywas, I guess that is popular too. Just wish there was an option to customize it

Just to clear up a few points.
Keymapper has a great flip closed Bluetooth mode. One button press (or hold or whatever) brings up a menu for BT On, Off, Discoverable.
So it's one button, then press jog in to turn it on for me.
One button, jog down, press jog in to turn it off. So easy I do it without looking now.
For one press SMS change your hompage to mailto: and then press the internet button, should take you into new SMS message. That works on most Sony phones but I haven't tried it on Px00 myself.
Everything you want to do on your phone is possible, it's just that no one has written the software to do it yet, probably due to lack of demand for these features. If you keep asking for them perhaps they will get made.
P.S. The mailto: homepage almost works, it takes you to a blank email in whatever preferred email account you specify in the control panel. Maybe there is another command for sms like smsto: or something.
P.P.S. I've found it! Just set your internet homepage to SMS: and on press of the internet button brings up a new blank SMS.
How handy is that?
It may not be obvious, but it sure is possible!
