After a lengthy debate at work last night we couldn't work out the answer to this question.

Is England a Country?

If anybody could help, it would be much appreciated.

England is a country. Just like Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

Great Britain is an empire, which hundreds of years ago controlled most of the planet. But then gave it all back, like we recently did with Hong Kong if i remember right.

If I'm not mistaken, Canada and Australia are also 'controlled by London' yet they are countries..... What we were tought in school is that 'the United Kingdom' (why not a Queendom??) Is the country in all the ways that matter internationally (ie with laws and politics) and that the four 'parts' of which the UK is made up of, may they themselves as separate countries, but they are not, in the sense that they do not have separate import policies, separate laws or a separate political leader. England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia and Canada all have seperate governments, import policies and laws etc..

The most simple one that springs to mind is in England, to get married you have to be 18. In Scotland, its 17. Scotland and Ireland have their own Parliaments, even Northern Ireland that is part of the GB empire has its own Parliament.

They are all countries in their own right, as their only link with England - the centre of the British empire - is the same religion / sovereignty.

I've never worked out why there's not a UK football team (Rugby has the Lions [I know includes Ireland]) Ryan Giggs on the left wing and Rab Douglas in goal (sorry @meths) Barry Fergusson in mid field Craig Bellamy up front to name a VERY few.

NI is not part of GB. NI is part of the UK (the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland). This message was posted from a T68i

Empires are ruled by Emperors. Kingdoms are ruled by Kings (that should include United Kingdom). So, is England a Country? Well, Countries are ruled by ....... (Fill in the gap yourself). This message was posted from a Z600
