There might be a very good idea to check out the Sony Ericsson Developer World.

For further information and a lot of good and useful stuff, take a look at Sony Ericsson Developer World Home.

Note: You have to register to be able to do anything of worth, but the registration is quite straightforward.

The development tools for Symbian in general are a joke. UIQ is poorly supported - there is Borland builderX.. it contains a GUI builder and other tools to speed up development.. for Series 60 only. Unfortunately. If CbuilderX offered the functionality for UIQ as it does for Series 60, it would be good.

You can use MetroWerks C++ for Symbian, but the IDE is extremely backwards.. it resembles an IDE from the early 90s on Windows - no GUI builder, no wizards. it has code completion.. which doesn't always work. Really, its a joke - does next to nothing to aid development.

Development for UIQ using C++ is extremely long winded and poorly supported by Development vendors.

There is Java but its fairly limited - you can't access all APIs as you can in C++ - but you can get access to BT.

Then again there is VB - using a cross platform add-on you can create VB apps on Symbian.. but the Symbian plugin isn't cheap (sorry forget its name).

There is an effort to port Python over to Symbian.. once again, UIQ comes off worse.. the progress for Series 60 is quite good, but lacking for UIQ.. at the moment you can only create console apps..

Overall, I'm very unimpressed by the development tools for Symbian, especially UIQ.

Symbian themselves should create an IDE - or better, to make plugins for Eclipse.. because other software Vendors aren't doing a good job.
