these days its fairly straight forward.
lets start with your current setup.
Do you have ADSL?
if so is it one of these silly usb adsl modems that BT, AOL and others give you by default or one with RJ45 socketc to connect the modem to your pc via ethernet cable?
btw, I get most of my stuff from
DSL Warehouse

get a dsl broadband router, get a wireless access point,
get some pcmica cards for laptops and bingo.
or u could get a wireless dsl broadband router which would be easier.

ok, so I would say ditch the supplied modem unless you want to use internet connection sharing through that pc which means it must always be on.
I would ghet something like this
SMC wireless 4 port ADSL router as it has the adsl modem and both wireless and wired connectivity (
here are some other choices)
so you plug your adsl cable from the wall into this and if you are like our setup where we have one main desktop (my wifes) and 3 laptops then you can run a category 5 ethernet cable from the router directly into the desktop and buy a few usb or pcmcia 820.11g (in this case) wireless adaptors for the laptops. these are quite cheap as is a pci network adaptor card for your desktop if your desktop currently has no RJ45 socket to plug a cable into it or you could just make that wireless too
we also have a HP multifunction printer/scanner/fax/copier etc thingy as well which was supplied with a network adaptor so another cable runs from that into the router and anyone can print/fax etc from anywhere too
edit: ok ignore the bit about network adaptors for the laptops. mine also has wifi built in but the kids don't and they both work as well as each other
