I will like to know if the cradle that comes with the P900 is for connectivity with my PC or for charging the phone.

The cradle is USB for connectivity to your PC.
You can also attach a charger to the cradle so it charges the phone as well.
So in answer to your question, it's both!

And is it not a serial connection masquerading as a usb connection - hence the reason why it is sooooooo slow (when it does go that is)
