After I ranted a bit to Orange the latest reply I got to an email included the words:

"I understand your concerns that some of the functuality of the phone is currently unavailable and apologise for any inconvenience this is causing you.

I have forwarded your comments and feedback to the relevant project team.

The issue with the functuality of the phone has been escalated to an area in technical support, that deals solely with handset design.

They are investigating to determine why this function was removed and if it will be restored in the near future."

from someone called Sharon and similarly fro George:

"I would like to advise that it would appear that Orange have reduced some functionality of this phone which has been escalated to an area in technical support that deals solely with handset design.

We are investigating this to determine why this function was removed and if it will be restored in the near future."

So maybe they will do something about it.. and maybe it's just marketing spin.

SE themselves didn't seem bothered

"With regards to your enquiry, Orange have customised the mobile phones for specific use on their network and I am sure they have taken into account design and features that their software customisation entails.

If you are not happy with the implementation of operator-specific mobile phones, offline sim-free mobile phones may be a viable option to consider. Unfortunately, aside from that, I cannot provide further assistance as to how you can disable certain Orange customisations."

(sorry about a new thread, i did search - but I've lost the one I intended to reply to, Mods... feel free to move this.)
