GOwin wants to say it depends on the network (réseau in french) that you use. Here in Turkey, we have Telsim which lets you to download unlimited data for 30€ (it was 2€ two months ago!) per month. And with Aycell, internet via GPRS was completely free until this April. So, it really depends on the network.

Well, I used that free Aycell GPRS when my DSL line was broken, the speed was depending on the hours when you were using, and the location you were living.
There was a really rush to GPRS because it was free, and I experienced many different results... After 2 A.M. and until 9 A.M, the speed satisfied me, it was as fast as a 56k modem, but during normal hours of the day, it was not more than 1-2 kb/sec. I can say the same for Telsim GPRS.
Now I'm using Turkcell (only when I need), and GPRS is not cheap with them, and the speed is far better than Aycell.
The more you pay, the more you get.

Here in Serbia, at provider Mobtel, porstpaid still have free GPRS, and also free internet via GPRS, and speed is over 900 kbps!
