Hi,
Before formatting my phone, i backed up my SMS' (copied all C:/system/mail folder to my desktop). After the format, i restored all the mail folder to it's location but one file : index. The phone says it's in use even i closed Messages program with switcher. Any suggestions?

But you can go to messages? what if you try to send a sms or ask somebody to send you one? i guess the app will make new index and perhaps it will pick up all the smses that are in the mail folder. I mean, i'm just guessing here, i have no idea if this will work, but i guess it's worth the try.

Already tried it. Doesn't work... All i have to do is to replace that index file but it's in use.
If there is any way to store messages into drive D, i can easily replace the index file with a card reader...

Found the ultimate solution for backing up your SMS folder :
1- Backup your phone using the PC Suite.
2- Search for *.ecs with Windows' search function. My backup file's name is my p800 2004-08-11 05.33.44.ecs and stored under this folder : C:Documents and Settings**Application DataSony Ericssonbackups350443-10-******-1 (I'm using WinXP)
3- Rename this file to .zip and open it.
4- Copy your /system/mail folder to your desktop.
5- Now put your phone on the cradle.
6- Open again the backup utility. Press the backup button and let the program shut you phone down. And then turn it on again. Let it back up your phone again. When the screen which asks you to open the phone, flight mode etc. DO NOTHING!
7- Open Epocware PC File Manager.
8- Go to C:/system and delete the whole mail folder.
9- Copy the mail folder which is on your desktop (the one from the backup) under the system folder
10- Restart your phone and you're done!
*tested with my own P800 w/ lastest firmware.

Hmmm....just wondering, is there no easier way? cant you transfer all your sms to your sim card and recover it later after you've formatted the phone? Is that not possible?

You are right bout the MMS bit, how many sms you can store on ur sim will depend on the mem capacity of ur sim. I'm lucky coz my sim has a 128MB capacity, so that should be more than enough for all my sms. I guess for my MMS, I will have to do it the complicated way as suggested above. Any easier way?
