What exactly does this mean?
I'm getting it quite a lot currently but when it appears the is always 3 bars of signal strength. Can anyone help?

I think they have blocked your service on your sim. Call your operator and ask them if something is wrong with your sim card.

Either that, or you have no signal from your service provider. The phone is picking up another service provider's signal, which you are not allowed to use - except for making emergency calls! Does it show this only occasoinally, or all the time, no matter where you are?
If the latter is the case, then as Trigga said, the phone or your sim could have been blocked. Contact your service provider if this is the case.

Your sim has not been blocked, youre just getting a bad signal from your network, but a good signal from another network.
If its a major problem, consider changing networks.
