I've just been in Japan for a few months and have to say that the phones over there impressed me! They're years ahead of what we have here in Europe for some strange reason (why does the latest technology stay within Japan for a while before it gets to other countries?) and I would love to have one, but unfortunately with the CDMA system it won't work over here (I'm in Norway). Most of them even had options for displaying menus in English.

I did find an international model which had both CDMA and (triple band) GSM, but it was designed for people living in Japan, roaming from overseas and didn't have any interchangeable SIM compartment.

Does anyone know if there are GSM compatible phones available in/from Japan so I can get all that latest gadgetry and be a little different from everybody else? Most phones over here look hopelessly old-fashioned compared to what I've seen in Japan.

GSM was never usd in Japan so no luck. They have WCDMA networks and phones there though. IF the spectrum used in Japan is the same as in europe you should be able to bring one home.
Does someone know?

some japanese phones will work in europe. They are dual mode/dual or triple band. Like Vodafone KK in Japan. Unlock it and it will work on the norway network and you can even use UMTS in the future.

Because all of Japan is a big beta test market. Only technologies that are successful and deemed affordable will be borught to other countries. Would you like to pay Japanese prices for those phones and services?

The WCDMA (3G) in Japan and in Europe use the same spectrum. So, if you have WCDMA phone with correct SIM-card and your operator has roaming in Japan, you can use your phone in Japan.
