What is a Midi file? What does it end with, like monkeys audio is .ape? What program can you use to convert mp3 to midi?

A midi file is a succession of binary codes that tell a midi player what instrument to play, what note, what octave, the volume, for how much time and the rise and decay times. The midi player has, in memory, samples of the sound of the various instruments and it plays them according to the codes.
Unless you have a very very smart conversion program that can listen to sound files (like wav, mp3, ...) and find all the parameters above, it is impossible to convert from mp3 to midi.
I only know one such program/computer combination: our brain.

Yes you can convert mp3 to midi. The quality depends on how good the midi player is on your soundcard in your pc. Modern soundcards that have like a 8 mb wavetable and 128 voices can make midi's in higher quality than any cellphone can handle. That is because a cellphone does not have an 8mb wavetable and no 128 polyphonic tunes

I would like to know how any kind of PC/Apple software can possibly recover notes, type of instrument played, length of the note, rise and decay out of a sound file. All this when several notes of several instruments are played together. Not to mention the singer and the words he sings.
I agree that the midi standard allows for the inclusion of sounds in midi files, but will those be played by the midi player of your phone?
