I may go to los angeles and was wondering what network(s) can be used over there and if they are 1900 Mhzs etc.

i guess you must ask your provider for the best reception.
i had the same problem because a went to the USA for vacation and i have ask my provider.

Cingular is the only GSM-provider in California. And it is (ofcourse) 1900 mhz.

Actually I was just in L.A. and San Diego a few weeks ago and I was using my AT&T T68 in L.A. with Cingular service, while in San Diego it was AT&T service.

Weird, I was in San Diego as well. Maybe I didn't search for networks there then. But I'm sure there were Cingular there as well. I was mostly over the entire CA and NV. And parts of Arizona. Only Cingular there...

To All: PacBell is now Cingular (and/or part of the Cingular network)...if AT&T is your primary GSM provider, it would make sense that if you went to L.A., it was using Cingular service cause AT&T outsources all places which they don't have GSM networks setup already to other service providers (like Cingular). They probably have a network setup in San Diego though and that is why your phone switches back to AT&T. My primary GSM provider is Cingular and it doesn't switch to AT&T while in San Diego FYI.
