Having just bought a K700, when perhaps I shouldn't really have done financially (but not regretting it - a great phone! ) I was wondering if Esato was a kind of 'marketing tool' in itself.

What I mean is, people read about the latest phone, exactly what it can do, weaknesses, etc., then go out and buy one. Having seen people raving about the K700, the pictures in the 'post pictures taken with a k700' thread, and people talking about it here, I wonder how many people were then persuaded to go out and buy one, going on what they've read/seen here?

's got their own independent marketing site effectively, one where faults as well as good points are discussed, and people can make their own intelligent decision on buying something like a K700 without any bias (as such!)

in general I might agree with you but in the case of the K700 just consider all the negative threads discussing K700 problems which will equally put people off buying this phone.

Given Esato's ability to help influence people as you suggest it would be nice if made their presence felt and also supplied prototype versions for us to evaluate and give comment on. After all, Esato has probably the largest, mostly dedicated, forum in the world (doesn't it)

Getting back to your point though I am sure many members have come here wondering what to buy and have ended up with phones but I wonder how many people go to other manufacturers forums and are driven by the interest and knowledge there to buy the products of that manufacturer?

Do other manufacturers have websites like Esato? I've seen many a post asking if there's a Nokia equivalent of Esato, and I don't think anyone's found one yet.

Good point about the K700, there are a lot of threads about firmware problems, and I've noticed a couple of quirks on my K700 already!

I wonder how many people have seen threads/disscussions on other phones, like the P900 have read them then gone out and bought a P9?

well Esato is NOT owned by Sony Ericsson so in the same way that Esato is for Sony Ericsson phones there are forums for Nokia, Samsung etc etc on other sites

You are here already because you are interested in SE phones/products. This forum helps you choose the phone that best suits your needs or orientate you in general about SE phones.

well i mostly bought it because of all the good reviews, actually the "bug threads" didn't really interest me considering you can get a new fw in half an hour, the only thing that was worrying me was the build quality and when i saw it in real life i immedietly bought it
but i guess that most people here are experts with mobiles so i personally don't think esato is a huge marketing forum, imho i think a tv ad attracts a lot more ppl to buy a se than a forum on the net

Oh, I wasn't saying that Esato WAS a marketing forum! Just that it was an unintentional side-effect of the whole esato 'phenomenon'.

If I thought this was just a marketing forum, I wouldn't still be here after 420+ posts.

The reason that I joined ESATO was the T68 mobile that I bought couple of years ago. I only wanted some info regarding my T68 that time and then eventually I became an Esatorian and loved this family.

But this topic is not about "I love ESATO" etc, so back to the topic.

ESATO in a way participates in "marketing" not on purpose but as a result of all these discussions we have here all day. ESATO doesnt "market" manufacturers and mobiles but presents the flaws and advantages of every mobile. If we call this "marketing" then I have to say that we "market" all mobiles existing all over the world!

Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, Siemens, Sagem, Sharp, Nec, Motorola etc. etc. etc.

I think, before you spend a lot of money on a phone, its vital you check out every aspect, and Esato is ideal, at least for SE phones. You cant believe everything the phone company tells you, salespeople will tell you anything to close the deal, i think its good to get independent views.
