I was at my girlfriends for a little while last night, which is in a poor signal area for O2, my telco. And whilst I was there, my signal was all over the place! Sometimes it was registering full or 4 bars, and on a few occasions it went to 'SOS calls only', before coming back nearly full strength. It does similar things in other poor signal areas, like where I live also.
It seems that the signal, when averaged out, it seems little better than my T610, which usually got between 1-2 bars, with the occasional 'SOS calls only' message.

Yes, when a phone says 'SOS calls only' it means it's picking up another network that you're not allowed to use, but you can use it to make emergency (999, 911, 112) calls on only, so, in my case, the O2 signal has dropped out, and the phone was most probably picking up the Orange signal, as they have a transmitter on a block of flats right next to where my girlfriend lives.

Yes, it means you are within a network's range but not one you can roam on. Some operators will carry an emergency call from any SIM.

I have a similar problem. There is a aerial near me (dunno if its an O2 one) but my signal swoops up and down all the time, even without me touching it... odd.

Well my problem is with a SE T610, so i've yet to sample the 'delights' of the K700i's signal. Good job I don't use my phone an awful lot.
Mainly texts.

I think that SEs refresh the signal strength indicator very regularly, so it probably varies more than a Nokia may appear to, but I have noticed that Nokias do tend to hold a slightly better signal generally. It just seems strange though that the signal will one second be full or nearly full, then all of a sudden it's zero!
