Okay, so my P900 is seemingly stuffed with things that I don't know a dime about. I only have select programs and a few messages in my inbox. Everything else - pictures, videos and games - are on my memory card, and still, the internal memory is filled up.
Hence, I decided to do an extreme makeover - much like with Windows - where I simply reset the phone to its default setup and install all the useful programs manually. I see no other way to free up space.
However, I would like to keep all my MMS and SMS messages and I do not know how to. Also, if there is a way to keep settings, that would be great too.
How do you guys do it?

Thats impossible im afraid. But with a file manager, you can clear a whole lot of space very easily if you know what youre doing. first step is to check out your storage manager and see if anything obvious is occupying a lot of memory.

Check out
Why on earth is my C drive filling up before taking the extreme step.
Besides, if you still want the easy way out
for SMS software look
here
I guess one of those allows to backup SMS and restore them. I dont think it does MMS though

A while ago I did a format of the internal drive then put all my contacts, wap settings, bookmarks & the like on the phone & did a back-up. Now I can format it anytime & restore to this previous state which is clean but restores all my settings etc.

do 2 back-ups... I do a regular back-up using the SE software... then use filemanager... copy the MAIL folder, and also 'beam' your contacts to your PC.
Once you do a master reset... try replacing the MAIL folder with the one you copied... and beam your contact list back to your phone... if that doesn't work... do a regular RESTORE... but this also brings back all your old software.

Well, I could do as you say and make two separate backups, but that wouldn't help much, seeing that I constantly add new entries to my contact managed.

I have the same problem with keeping contacts up to date but I get around it by sending the whole phonebook to a spare phone by BT or IR before restoring & then send them back after

Contacts isn't a problem for me seeing that Microsoft Outlook handles them. My disk is still very fragmented and I'd like to do a master reset while still keeping my MMS and SMS messages.
