Hi all
After much fiddling with settings and searching on the web and phoning O2...I finally managed to get my phone to connect using Agile (to MSN - not tried any other messenger services yet).
Here's a check list for O2 UK:
You need to have the "MobileWeb" GPRS service enabled on your account - speak to O2 about this.
While on the phone, ask them to send you a auto-setup txt with the correct GPRS settings.
When this arrives, edit it! - they send out the GPRS WAP settings which use the wrong bloody DNS address and username and password?
here are the correct settings:
APN address: mobile.o2.co.uk
Username: mobileweb
Password: password
Session type: Continuous / permanent
Authentication: Normal
Security: Off
DNS Servers: 193.113.200.200 and 193.113.200.201
This will then allow Agile to use the GPRS.
PLEASE NOTE, I DON'T KNOW IF CHANGING THESE SETTINGS WILL EFFECT OTHER SERVICES SUCH AS MMS OR EMAIL.
Cheers
Wayne

Just my experience - I haven't modified my phone in regards to GPRS and Mobileweb on 02 since I recieved my phone on an upgrade and I have never had any problems accessing the services using Agile Messenger or otherwise. I am on a contract and using a sim card that is 5 years old.

Just got off the phone to data support, because im a PAYG user i am not allowed tcp/ip networking ('mobile web') enabled on my sim. I asked why not and was told that its near impossible to enduce the charges. I asked how can Vodafone could do it and not europes largest network provider, 'o2 dd'. Was just told to upgrade to a contract. Pfft. Change of network it is..
