I just bought a new Sony Ericsson Z600 phone from the net that was unlocked. But the default ICON for the provider points to "Portal Claro". Since I am new to the cell phone world, I would like to know if could update the software so that it will not have vendor specific ICON. Also can I upgrade my cell phone software.

You don't mention, which firmware you currently have, if it isn't the most recent version then you should be able to take your mobile into a SonyEricsson service centre and have it upgraded. As I understand it, there isn't a great number of these service centres in the U.S. so you may very well have to send your mobile off, which will obviously take longer than simply popping into a service centre.
As for removing operator brands this is usually not done in firmware upgrades, but if you ask the service centre very nicely they might decide not to use the operator branded firmware upgrade and use the standard SonyEricsson one instead. SonyEricsson themselves are very unlikely to do this for you, you would be better off trying to locate an independent mobile dealer or someone who specialises in unlocking phones; they usually have the facilities and the inclination to remove branding, for a fee of course.

Ring Globalmob.com, they should be able to help you. They are ablt to tell you the latest firmware and what they can do for you. They are in the LA area and it might be worth a trip there if you are close by. That would be my option #1. Check their website for details. Otherwise you have to sent it to SE on the east coast.
Unlocked means it is unlocked from the previous service provider, but it is still branded as it seems.
