I just bought the Sony Ericsson T230 to use as a modem, as where I am staying there are no phone lines. After buying it I was told to buy a data cable. I bought a USB data cable (ERI T610/616 - can this work by the way?) and I got a CD with the drivers. Well apparently, the CD does not work with Windows XP. Does anyone know where I can download the drivers? I've been searching, I've been unsuccessful thus far. What else do I need to do? Is there any other software I'm supposed to have? Someone mentioned changing a setting on my phone from "WAP" to "web" but I'm unable to find that setting anywhere. Also, someone mentioned setting up a dial-up connection on my computer. How do I do that? And what phone number do I use? I'm assuming I should set up the connection as a modem connection. I'm sorry if I sound ignorant, but I am, I have no idea what I'm doing and would love some help from anyone. I'm suffering from internet withdrawal (I'm only getting to use this one for a few minutes).

By the way, the company who provides the cellular service don't know anything...at least, the persons who work for them. They haven't been able to help me at all.

Thanks for ANY help given.

First of all, before even trying to connect to the internet with a dial-up connection - you need to check that the cable works between your phone and PC.

Try installing software such as MyPictures etc. from the SonyEricsson website, if you can get this working and send pictures to your phone then you know that's not the problem area...

I think the cable works...cuz when I plug the phone into the computer, XP automatically detects it and tries to load the driver from the CD but then tells me it's not compatible with XP.

That doesn't prove the data cable works with your phone. But relax, that cable "should" work with your T230.

Download the driver from http://tech.prolific.com.tw

You should be looking for the "PL-2303 USB to Serial Bridge Controller" driver, listed under Smart I/O, USB 1.1

Once the driver is installed and working properly, a new COM port will be set up. This will be same as a regular modem using that same COM port.

Now download and install a modem driver from SonyEricsson support site. You'll be looking for the connectivity software for T200 (since there is nothing for T230). You can install this driver using the modem option under Control Panel.

If you are using your phone to call a regular number to your ISP, you just dial the phone number from dial-up networking on your PC. Note that not too many wireless providers allow this.

If regular dialup is not possible, you need GPRS instead, that is beyond the scope of this post. Since you need specific settings from your wireless provider. You also need to inquire about usage cost for GPRS.
