A patent for which Microsoft applied on March 6, 1997, has been granted: "Discoverability and navigation of hyperlinks via tabs." In other words, when a computer user uses the Tab key to move the focus from one hyperlink to another on a webpage opened in a browser, the use of that function is now owned by Microsoft.

The Tab patent, number 6,785,865, was granted on August 31st, just one among multiple patents granted to the software giant on that day. Another interesting grant is number 6,784,354, with an application date of March 13, 2003: "Generating a music snippet." Yes, you read that right. Now dividing a music stream into portions is Microsoft's domain. The abstract describes the process as follows:
... In one aspect, the music stream is divided into multiple frames of fixed length. The most-salient frame of the multiple frames is then identified. One or more music sentences are then extracted from the music stream as a function of peaks and valleys of acoustic energy across sequential music stream portions. The music snippet is the sentence that includes the most-salient frame.

hold up. why should this upset anyone? while we accept TAB in every day life now, as with any invention or innovation it takes someone to come up with the idea first and if they are bright enough they will patent it so that anyone else who uses their idea has to pay to use their idea.
I know if one day I can finally think of something outstanding or amazing that everyone in the world will use I will certainly patent it... and then retire

just because its microsoft, suddenly everyone gets humpy about it and I don't get that

Wow!

I had a great idea and i'll patent it. It's called "Krubach's Moving method". It allows people to move from one place to another.
The process is simple: just put your right leg in front and then move your left leg a bit further to your right one.
Then repeat the process until you've reached the place you intended.

This way any people who WALKS will pay me royalties.

If you had actually invented walking then maybe you'd be ok... MS however apparently did invent tab movement, so therefore why should they not reap the benefits? Because they're a big company making a lot of money they should be stopped from making more?

As someone who holds copyrights and patents I understand how important it is to someone to protect their creations. If any of you made something you would feel the same way.

First of all, i just think this patent is ridiculous not for being from MS.

Tab key was made originally to just space paragraphs (somehow a replacement of 8 space characters, but it one character only).

Requesting a patent over this is just ridiculous!
Accepting the request is even more ridiculous!

Your post really doesn't make sense first of all.

Why is it rediculous? Because you do it every day and now see it as commonplace? If MS created an OS with features and others start ripping that off it is wrong. We drink Coke every day, so does that mean it's so common anyone should be able to produce it and make money?
