Hello,

I just got my brand new T610 three days ago, and it looks very nice. It is actually a T616, just in case. I live in Chile (GSM850 GSM1900 GSM1800, Spanish and English required), and travel a bit around the US and Europe.

I have several technical questions:


The phone says the firmware version is:

Code:R1B027 prgCXC11-22569_MARTHA
R1B027 prgCXC11-22579_TAE

What is the latest firmware available for this phone? In my case, would I significanlty benefit from buying the dongle and upgrading the firmware? Notice I would need to keep the same languages available (English, Spanish, French and Portuguese).


Besides IR, I would like to use a faster synchronization medium. I also have the requirement to be able to reload the phone battery while away from the office, and it would be nice if I could do it with a USB cable. Is there a USB cable (such as DCU-10 or DCU-11) that will allow me to:


synchronize the phone with Outlook (contacts, appointment book).
recharge the phone's battery.
use the wonderful float's Mobile Agent in all its glory, including OBEX.


If I do go with the USB cable, and leaving aside the "wireless" advantage of bluetooth, would I be missing anything (in terms of capabilities) by going with a USB cable solution instead of a bluetooth dongle solution?


The locks information for my phone is:

Code:Network (LOCKED): 5
Network Subset (unlocked): 5
Service Provider(unlocked): 5
Corporate (unlocked): 5

What exactly am I missing by having the "Network" locked out? A straight reading of this information could lead one to believe I could switch service providers without any problems, right? Should I be able to use the same phone in other countries? In other words, what exactly are Network, Network Subset, Service Provider and Corporate locks?


The memory status for my phone shows:

Code:Free: 2100 KB
My sounds: 52 KB
My pictures: 74 KB
Themes: 51 KB
MMS inbox: 0 B
MMS unsent: 0 B
MMS sent: 0 B
MMS templates: 55 KB
Games: 68 KB

Does this look right? Could I physically add more memory to the phone (I think this is impossible)? Can I somehow erase stuff (other than the obvious 52+74+51+55+68=280 KB) to have more available memory? I have seen people reporting about 2700 KB free, and my numbers could not possibly add up to that.

Welcome here! There are several language packages, called 'emma' and all of them has got a number aswell. If u never did it before, i would suggest an se service point for the upgrade aswell. The latest fw for an unbranded fone is the r6c, but many members complained for bugs and suggested r4c instead of it. This message was posted from a T630

R4C is the most reliable and stable FW for T610/616, many posters complains of bugs with the newest R6C, so maybe is better to upgrade to R4C and then wait. SE usb cables let you charge while connected to your PC, so you won't run out of power. Anyway, to upgrade you must go to a SE service center because T616 is not upgradable via web, good luck and enjoy your T616, it's really a great phone!!!.

Is this correct? Is IR really faster than a USB cable? That would strike me as counterintuitive.

Also, is there anything I would be able to do with a bluetooth connection (like downloading files from the phone to the PC) that I would NOT be able to do with a USB cable?

I will look into local service centers as a first step for the FW upgrade.

Ok, IMO cable is the most reliable one, I use it and together with FMA works great, BT is fast, but sometimes you lost connection and needs power to work, so you get less battery life. Anyway, I would go for cable or BT, both can upload and download files from the phone to PC and both works great.

note: these are standard speeds, some may or may not be supported by your cellphone or other equipment!

note2: disclaimer: I may be wrong, used the internet and my best knowledge for this subject.

note3: speeds are in kilobits and megabits per second

Bluetooth: 64kb/s - 1mb/s
Wi-Fi: max. 11mb/s
IR: max. 4mbit/s (due to the design of most serial connections, IR is limited to 115.2kb/s)
USB1.1: max. 12mbit/s
USB2.0: max. 480mbit/s

Thanks to everyone for their answers. To summarize:


My phone's firmware is R1B, latest is R6C, although it has been reported to be unstable and some people advise the upgrade only up to R4C. If the phone is still under warranty, it is better to take it to a service center than to try the upgrade using a dongle.

A USB cable is reported to work exactly the same as Bluetooth in terms of capabilities, and FMA works great with it. The ones built by Sone Ericsson will charge the phone's battery as well. USB cable should be fastest, then Bluetooth, then IR (as one would probably guess from experience and common sense). Their top theoretical data rates are:


USB2.0: max. 480 Mbps
USB1.1: max. 12 Mbps
Bluetooth: 64 Kbps - 1 Mbps
IR: max. 4 Mbps (due to the design of most serial connections, IR is limited to just 115.2 Kbps)


The phone's Network Lock means I will not be able to switch providers without unlocking the phone.

The memory available in the phone looks about right. A firmware update would probably squeeze more memory out by improving the image compression.


And yes, the phone is excelent for my needs and uses.

One more question: anybody knows the difference between USB cables DCU-10 and DCU-11?

To The Don: you probably know this, but your picture of Al Pacino is actually from Scarface, not from Godfather.
