Hi, I was wondering if you could help, the p800/p900 both do not work with a BMW bluetooth car kit, do any of you know if the P910 would work, considering that it now has a bluetooth profile?
Many thanks

From my experience in the industry, the BMW bluetooth kit has a limited handset compatibility
last time i checked (a few months ago), the newest handset that was compatible was the nk 6310i! amongst others was the se t68i
if you speak to your BMW dealership (get someone technical, rather than a salesman) they will be able to give you a list of compatible handsets for your specific car kit

See this from a BMW board, interview with SE guy from UK
(I got an M3 and am unable to use my P800 or P900, using a T610 for the car right now, but I will buy a P910 since that one SHOULD WORK!)
1. The T68i – which is hardly cutting edge or top of the range – supports both hands-free and headset profiles?
[Gary Taylor] This product was always intended to support both BT profiles (Headset & Handsfree) in all stages of the design process.
2. The P900 – which is intended to be the flagship model (at least for a while) supports only the headset profile?
[Gary Taylor] This product was only intended to support the Headset profile, as was the P800, from the original design stage. This was a product management decision at the time, based on the Symbian operating system available at the time.
3. Numerous other SE phones in the T and Z series support both profiles, when again, they are only mid-range rather than top-end? Surely the top-end, premium priced model should offer all of the functionality of the lesser models, plus additional functionality to justify its positioning?
[Gary Taylor] This is more of an Operating system (as above) issue. The “normal” handsets do not operate as a PDA using Symbian and their operating systems were designed to support both BT profiles.
4. SE would expect car manufacturers to offer anything more than hands-free compatibility? All required functionality to operate the phone, including voice activated dialling, phone book etc., is provided by my BMW.
[Gary Taylor] I cannot really comment on BMW’s decisions, but I believe that their third party suppliers BT car kit does not support the Handsfree profile..... This is why the P900 will not operate.
5. When most of the car manufacturers who offer Bluetooth compatibility seem to have the same view, should SE’s position be the correct/logical one? It might be different if BMW were alone here, but clearly they are not. This is a case of SE blaming everyone else for getting it wrong, which is hard to justify.
[Gary Taylor] Our own car kits support both BT profiles. I cannot understand why other third party BT car kits do not support both BT profiles, when this technology is readily available. The reasons for our current PDA offerings, not supporting Handsfree profile are highlighted above.
6. The (alleged) lack of backward compatibility on the part of BMW should make any difference to pairing with the P900 if it has no hands-free profile? This is surely irrelevant?
[Gary Taylor] If the BMW car kit supported the Headset profile, you would be able to pair your P900, as this device also supports the Headset profile.
7. The P910 is rumoured to offer both hands-free and headset profiles? I thought the operating system was unable to provide this, hence your comment about patches not being possible. As I have seen photos of the P910 OS running on a P900, I am not sure that your statement regarding the impossibility of providing a patch to the P900’s OS is actually correct.
[Gary Taylor] My information as at today, is that the P910i does support both profiles. This functionality has been built into the newest Symbian operating software as a demand. I have again asked the project about a patch for the P900 and the answer is that the Symbian operating system on P900 cannot be upgraded to support both BT profiles.

Unfortunatly BT car kit compatability is all down to whether or not the phone manufacturer is prepared to share their BT software with the kit manufacturers. The reason why the 6310i is the most recent Nokia phone supported by BMW is that Nokia wont release the BT software code to other kit developers for any of thrie new phones. This may also be why the Pxxx series work so poorly with the BMW kits! However just about any BT phone can at least make/receive a call on the BMW kits. All your loosing by not using a fully supported phone is the phonebok access on the BMW's IDrive.

BMW UK have recently had a b*llocking about it actually, so don't assume its all SE's fault.

Has anyone used the P910 phone with a current 5 or 6 series BMW?
There have been a few posts about use of the SonyEricsson P910 phone with BMW 3 series Bluetooth car kits, with modest success (http://bimmer.roadfly.org/bmw/forums/e63/5907970-1.html). Knowing that the 5 and 6 series share the same platform and are significantly different that the 3 series platform, I'd appreciate any relevant experience to share with other owners. I have a P900 that does NOT work with my Bluetooth-capable BMW 645Ci, since the P900 (and P800) lacks the BT handsfree profile. The P910 has the required handsfree profile (Symbian OS upgrade), but that does not guarantee complete functionality:
a) ability to make/receive calls
b) phone book synched to car
c) calling name display (using adddress book)
d) ability to send/receive SMS
Can anyone verify compatibility? I'd like to verify functionality before I pay for a new handset.
many thanks,
Robert
