Hi im from New Zealand and brought my phone from overseas off ebay ages ago. I have the R2A firmware but can get it up graded here to the R2N which they say is the latest.
The SE service centre says that I will need to back everything up which is fair enough, but they said that the phone will probably reset back to the original countrys settings and lock me out of my phone?

Is this true and is there anyway around this?
Its a K700i unlocked unbranded

(yes I searched )

I don't see why they couldn't just flash it back to the factory settings and then upgrade it to their own latest firmware. As far as I know, the K700i on sale in Europe and Africa is the same as that on sale in Australasia; someone please correctme if I am wrong.

if it's unbranded I see no reason why they could not flash unbranded local firmware over it. (the only possible reason is that would have MADE it impossible to flash different country settings (language versions) onto an unbranded phone. That however would be total stupidity on 's part imho)

And since when do unbranded unlocked phones lock out users?

I think there is a possibility that the person you spoke to may not have all the correct answers

This is the email from SE service centre

Hi,

I have an unlocked unbranded SE K700i phone and was wondering if you could update my phone to the latest firmware?
I have the R2A041 firmware at the moment.
How much will this cost and what sort of time frame?

Thanks in advance

Thanks for your enquiry Matthew ,

If the phone was purchased in New Zealand and a receipt is provided it will be covered under wty if there is a problem present , otherwise a software upgrade fee is $25 + GST ($28.10) if you come directly into one of our Walkin Centres. Normally takes about 1 hour, as long as it is straight forward and there are no problems. Customer MUST back up Data before an Upgrade though.

Also there is a Risk involved with all Overseas phones that a software upgrade will relock the phone back to the Network Service Provider overseas and we will not be able to unlock it.

The latest software is R2N001

Kind Regards

Hi Megan,

Must be along day for ya huh? I dont know who Mathew is hehe
Anyways, I brought this phone from overseas months ago, long before they came out over here.
I dont mind paying for the firmware upgrade, I live in Palmerston North but can freight it anywhere in the country, and can pay for the return freight costs.

Thanks
Dylan Hargreaves

Hi Dylan, yes sorry it really is a long day hahaha, you can either courier it directly to us at 89 Carbine Rd Mt Wellington and put in a return courier bag with your return address on it , just be aware that overseas models are risky to software upgrade as per my email below. Regarding payment for the job , we take either Credit Card or Direct Credit payments. If you have any more queries please dont hesitate to contact us on our toll free helpline on 0508 737 247

Regards Megan

i don't think it will be locked to its original network since they would need the network's locking codes to do that.

also, upgrades for the newer phones normally do not delete your data and settings, although it is always better to be safe and backup first.

well.... the trick with the newer software is that is has this digital 'signature' which would install only fw upgrades with the same 'signature' on it... so if it ever was locked/branded you would get that again.

Since I am fairly sure there is no unlocking/flashing with other signature or non-signature software POSSIBLE at this time... that cannot be the case on your phone

I'd say go for it.

If they manage to brand and lock your phone which is n't branded/locked now they have seriously screwed up
