I wonder why Ericsson let go of BlueTooth?!

Why did they make it an open standard?
They must have lost millions in developmentcosts on that one or did they get anything for making it an open standard?

There are a number of reasons why Ericsson did this. Firstly, it was a group of almost 1000 companies that started the project (including Ericsson), and they all shared the development, there-by saving £billions each in development costs.

Another reason is that if only ericsson had developed Bluetooth, then it is highly likely that only ericsson would have put it in their phones, meaning that us ericsson users would have had to buy a even more expensive ericsson made bluetooth dongle, rather than having the option of buying a TDK dongle, or even having bluetooth built into your laptop.

If this had happened, Nokia, Palm, Psion, etc. would have all developed their own versions of wirless communication, so either it'd be difficult to get compatible devises, or you'd have to by different dongles for each manufacturer's product.

I guess this is just the old Betamax vs VHS argument

We should applaud Ericsson for making the Bluetooth an open standard. We won't want just one particular company controlling a very promising technology.
