I have seen all of the following nomenclature (P910 P910i P910s) used when discussing the phone formerly referred to as the Sony Ericsson P910. Are there really that many separate variants of this device?

well all companies use some sort of indexes to tell on which continent each product sells, se uses c, a and i which mean china, america, and international, while i didn't heard anything about s
but all products are exactly the same the only thing that differs are the bands on which they work ... so most people just generalize it and say p910 without an index....

Not quite. There are several sotware differences. For instants, the Chinese version has chinese text support and a chinese calendar, the i version doesn't.
