I have only been a Sony Ericsson fan for a couple of months or so. I used to be a Nokia fan but no longer. I noticed a couple of days ago while I was texting using my K700i that I could insert melodies, animations, smiley faces, pictures and even format the text in sms messages but when I send them to a Nokia phone, they don't show up. Even smiley faces end up as ":)". But when I send it to a Sony Ericsson phone, it comes out nicely. Why is that?

Ems isnt supported in every fones. Same at smilies, cannot be shown on the same way always. Works perfect between se and u should give a try which other which other brand fones. The price is the same as for sms, size depends what melody, anim etc u use in it.

So EMS is not the same as SMS? I wonder if EMS is network depedent and if I'm being charged extra over regular SMS messages. Here in the Philippines, it's a Nokia country and while there are quite a few Sony Ericsson users it's still Nokia everywhere you go. Other brands are a real minority here so it's pretty hard trying out EMS on other brands. Actually I can only think of around 7 or 8 people in my phonebook of around 250+ contacts who have Sony Ericsson phones and the rest are Nokias.

I remember sending a picture from my old 8310 to my cousins siemens and it came up as wierd characters, like an encoded message or something and thats basically showing that what 701 said, the same encoded message thing is sent but the nokias are designed to interpret it as a certain picture.

Hi Dinky! Pinoy here :-) No extra charge! EMS =K700i's ability to translate character combinations into smileys, etc. Nokia opted not to support EMS; bad decision - their pic messages aren't as universal as EMS, which is a bit similar to the YM smiley system - more flexible & expressive.

but even old ericsson t65 was able to support picture messages sent by nokia as well as ems.
i think ems was a precursor to mms.
