I've been through the whole process of setting up to download the firmware upgrade, only to get a message saying there's no update available for my operator (vodafone).
Have any vodafone customers actually managed to upgrade online?

It's not possible to upgrade on line.
I emailed Vodafone about this and they have told me to take my phone to any vodafone store and they will arrange to upgarde it. I'm going to take it in tomorrow, but from what I've heard else where on this forum I don't think the people in store will have a clue what I'm on about. But will see.
